What makes a great portrait?

People often ask me &"what kind of portraits do you do?" A question which I find difficult to answer. Despite doing this work for over a decade, I still find something totally unique about every person (or little person) that I Photograph. My portraits, I hope are a reflection of the people that are in them and like them, each one is totally unique. The thing that I love most about this job is seeing the look on a Mother's face as she sees her childs image captured in a moment. Since my own two boys were born, I've looked at children in a new light. Each child has their own sense of mischief and totally unique personality. I'm intrigued with the way that children make sense of the world around them. The way they mimic us (and push us) to see how we react to them and of course the innocence that is in every child. With every new client comes a totally new challenge. Yesterdays rules no longer apply. I still spend hours setting up the lights before a portrait session to get for the perfect lighting. But when I pick up the camera, then that's when the Magic begins...
